Artist in Residence: THE RZA
THE RZA is the chief producer and founding member of the legendary hip hop group the Wu-Tang Clan,
which also spawned the solo careers of Method Man and the late O.D.B. In addition to his success
as a recording artist/producer, THE RZA is a BAFTA-nominated film composer whose credits include
Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai, Kill Bill Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, Barbershop II, Blade Trilogy and
Unleashed. THE RZA is also finding himself in front of the camera, staring opposite Clive Owen in
Derailed. On top of his film and music careers, THE RZA is the author of The Wu-Tang Manual.
As this year's Artist in Residence, THE RZA has selected the following three films.
The 36th Chamber of Shaolin (1977)
Directed by Lau Kar-leung
Written by Ni Kuang
With masterfully choreographed fights, a classic revenge storyline, and an iconic performance by
Gordon Liu, The 36th Chamber of Shaolin is the martial arts classic that all others are judged by.
Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (1999)
Directed and written by Jim Jarmusch
Directed by quintessential independent filmmaker Jim Jarmusch, Forest Whitaker gives a superb
performance as Ghost Dog, a tough-as-nails hitman who lives by a strict moral code even as he
methodically murders the crime bosses who ordered his execution.
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966)
Directed by Sergio Leone
Written by Age-Scarpelli, Luciano Vincenzoni, and Sergio Leone
In the waning days of the Civil War, a coffin full of gold is up for grabs. It's just a question of
who gets to it first in this recently restored western classic.
THE RZA will also be headlining our ToonTime with THE RZA program at the Ford Amphitheatre.
