Sydney Pollack - Guest Director
Syndey Pollack's nineteen films have received 46 Academy Award nominations including two for
Best Picture. His film Out of Africa won seven Oscars including Best Picture and Best Director
for Pollack. He's received the Golden Globe for Best Director twice, the National society of Film
Critics' Award, the New York Film Critic's Award, and the NATO Director of the Year Award.
Mr. Pollack has demonstrated a unique ability to move from comedy to drama to thriller and back
again with equal mastery. We are honored to have him as this year's Guest Director. In this capacity,
Mr. Pollack has chosen three film to screen at the Festival that have been inspirational to him and
his work:
The Conformist
Directed by Bernado Bertolucci
Never have a director and cinematographer shared such a powerful, singular vision than Bernardo
Bertolucci and Vittorio Storaro on The Conformist, presented here in the original Italian and
including the often-excluded Dance of the Blind sequence.
Notorious
Directed by Alfred Hitchcock
Alfred Hitchock's tale of wartime romance and espionage -- featuring a radioactive McGuffin,
arsenic, and even a domineering mother -- is an acute portrayal of psychosexual perversity.
On The Waterfront
Directed by Elia Kazan
The American classic stars Marlon Brando as a longshoreman struggling against union bosses and
self-doubt to expose corruption on the New York docks.
