Film Independent’s Los Angeles Film Festival is collecting and recycling old cell phones to raise funds for its educational programs and to reduce the risk that the hazardous materials in these phones end up in our landfills.

Collection boxes will be conveniently located at the Intel Tech Pavilion & Box Office from June 22 – July 2 during the Los Angeles Film Festival and will be available at the admission entrance to the screening of An Inconvenient Truth, June 24, 8 p.m., California Plaza with special appearance by former Vice President, Al Gore.

Festival patrons will receive $1 off admission with the donation of an old cell phone.

Film Independent has partnered with ECO-CELL, a company, which pays organizations for collecting used cell phones, batteries and accessories. Through Eco-cell’s program, 70% of the phones collected will be used by first-time, low income users abroad or by selected organizations, such as Battered Women’s Programs for emergency use (911 calls). Eco-Cell runs a strict no landfill program. All items received by Eco-cell, including batteries, accessories and cell phones with no resale value, will be recycled using the best demonstrated technologies for recycling e-waste.

Film Independent will earn up to $15 per recycled phone. For more information, visit:
