On Wednesday, June 28, Film Independent announced the winners of the Target Filmmaker Awards at the Spirit of Independence evening at the W Hotel in Westwood Village. Steve Collins, director and writer of Gretchen, took home the Target Filmmaker Award (for Best Narrative Feature). Amy Berg, director and writer of Deliver Us From Evil, won the Target Documentary Award (for Best Documentary Feature). Both award winners receive $50,000 each.

Film Independent also presented its second annual Spirit of Independence Award to Oscar-winning actress and producer Charlize Theron. The Spirit of Independence Award was created last year to recognize an individual for his or her commitment to artistic independence in film.

Audience and more Jury Awards Announced!

Film Independent announced the Audience and additional Jury Awards at the Closing Night of the 2006 Los Angeles Film Festival on Sunday, July 2. The Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature went to Robert Cary’s Ira & Abby. The Audience Award for Best Documentary Feature went to Jeff Werner and Susan Koch for their documentary Mario's Story. Other awards announced include the Audience Award for Best International Feature, the Outstanding Performance Award in the Narrative Competition, and the Jury Short Film Awards.
