In keeping with a longstanding family tradition, Marco has returned to his family’s beach house for Easter weekend. This year, however, he’s brought his new girlfriend Sofía, whose unorthodox beliefs and disruptive passions threaten the already tenuous fabric that binds the home. Chilean director Sebastián Campos’ disquieting family drama, which takes place over three days and was shot sequentially in the same amount of time, makes use of improvisational performances and intimate digital camerawork to form a tense examination of desire, obligation and family pride.  More...

Richard Linklater’s adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s sci-fi classic of paranoia and drug use is a darkly funny, visually arresting journey into the not-too-distant future. Employing the same animation methods as Waking Life, A Scanner Darkly is the story of Fred, an undercover cop, who is also Bob, an undercover drug dealer. Forced to spy on himself as his two personalities drift further apart, Fred finds the membrane between drug-addled reality and drug-addled fantasy growing ever thinner in this psychotropic head trip of a film.  More...

Japanese master Akira Kurosawa’s boldly elaborate chambara tale of wandering swordsmen who band together to protect a village against marauding bandits remains a touchstone of the genre. Famed for its vigorous editing, dynamic compositions and spectacular battle sequences, The Seven Samurai also speaks eloquently about class politics and questions of national identity besetting postwar Japan.  More...

In the tiny town of Kumba, Cameroon, in a courtroom that hears domestic cases — child and spousal abuse and divorce — the formidable Judge Beatrice Ntuba and Prosecutor Vera Ngassa are crusaders for justice, using wisdom and wisecracks to champion those courageous enough to confront their abusers. Celebrating Ntuba and Ngassa’s personal and professional devotion to righting wrongs in a society undermined by culturally entrenched discrimination against women, this empowering and often hilarious documentary shows that sometimes individuals can revolutionize an unjust system.  More...
