Chadian auteur Mahamat-Saleh Harouns third feature is a stripped-down parable about revenge and reconciliation. Teenage war orphan Atim (Ali Bacha Barkaï) journeys from his tiny village to the capital city on a mission to kill the man who years earlier murdered his father. His target turns out to be not a monster but a devoutly religious baker (Youssouf Djaoro) who gruffly takes the boy under his wing as an apprentice. Harouns laconic style, unhurried tempo and superb use of silence lend this simple, specifically African tale the feel of elemental timelessness.

Equally inspired by Mozart's
The Magic Flute, spaghetti westerns and the traditional myths of his South African childhood, writer/director Teboho Mahlatsi conceived this visually ravishing fable about a hermetic hero lured out of solitude by the sight of a beautiful woman only to be ambushed by an evil horseman.
