Mahamat-Saleh Haroun was born in Abéché, Chad, in 1960. He first studied film in Paris, then journalism in Bordeaux. In 1999 he directed his debut feature, Bye, Bye Africa, which was awarded Best First Film at the Venice International Film Festival.
