A thoughtful portrayal of how our past can cast a darkening pall over our present, this story of rehabilitation and redemption follows a young man slowly reacquainting himself with society at large after many lost years. Where he has been and why is unclear, as director John Crowleywho also made the kinetic ensemble piece Intermissioncarefully withholds information throughout the film, continually revising the viewer's impressions of the main character, played with beguiling poise by Andrew Garfield, while also reshaping the viewpoints of those around him. Peter Mullan, great as always, gives a salty but nuanced performance as the boy's appointed minder, the one person who has truly seen him through thick and thin. Adapted from the novel by Jonathan Trigell, Boy A is a powerful portrait of two men's ongoing struggle to break free of the grips of old sins.
