Nicolás Pereda's fiercely disquieting debut immediately places him in the ranks of his countrymen Carlos Reygadas and Alejandro González Iñárritu as a gifted chronicler of a Mexico reeling with petty injustice and irrevocably separated into rural and urban classes.

The deceptively simple story centers on Vicente, a young man trying to save his grandmother's land from her avaricious sons who have swooped down from the U.S. at the first sign of a serious illness. As Vicente makes his way to the city for legal help, the focus shifts to his mother, working as a house servant for an upscale urban couple who offer her an “indecent proposal” to conceive a child for them. Patiently deepened by Pereda's mesmerizing long takes and keen eye for emotional detail, the film presents a world where everything and everyone is for sale but where grace can still be found in the spaces between.
