The family-driven crime saga receives fresh new life in Australian writer-director David Michod’s stunningly confident debut. After the fatal drug overdose of his mother, 17-year-old Joshua “J” Cody has nowhere to turn but his grandmother and uncles, whose criminal activities his mom had desperately tried to keep him away from. But now without any protective buffer to shield him from their dangerous behavior, J falls into the crosshairs as his family engages in a violent battle with Melbourne’s police force.

Winner of this year’s dramatic jury prize for world cinema at Sundance, Animal Kingdom is a monstrously entertaining crime film that revels in its sinister mood, smart script, and superb ensemble. Playing a no-nonsense detective determined to bring down the Codys, Guy Pearce will be the most recognizable name to American audiences, but this taut thriller sports several impressive performances, including Jacki Weaver as J’s casually ruthless grandmother, Ben Mendelsohn as the family hothead, and newcomer James Frecheville as the soft-spoken J, who must quickly learn the rules of the criminal underworld if he’s to survive.
