This psychedelic mash-up of road movie, concert film, and family history begins when Gruff Rhys, lead singer of Brit pop band Super Furry Animals, teleports (yes, teleports) from Wales to Patagonia, where, guitar in hand and Power Rangers helmet on head, he sets out to explore the musical and migratory connections between his homeland and South America.
In search of two relatives—one a poncho-wearing folk singer from the ’70s who combined Welsh lyrics with Latin sounds, the other a suspected murderer who emigrated in the late 1800s to Patagonia—Rhys meanders through the countryside, meeting people and making music, while the film captures his journey in a Jodorowsky-inspired rush of split screens, unreliable narrators, jam sessions, and interviews with distant relatives. With its delightfully free form style, Separado! is never meant to be taken too seriously. It is, however, absolutely sincere in its affection for the people and the music Rhys encounters. His giddy enthusiasm endows the film with an infectious energy that propels him and the film towards its magical, musical conclusion.
