Gerardo Chijona's controversial love story is set in 1993 Cuba, during the years the Cubans refer to as the special period. The Soviet Union had collapsed and with it the Cuban economy, leading to a decade of crippling depravation. Against this backdrop, Eunice, a young country girl, flees from her sexually abusive father and hooks up with a band of homeless teens on the road to Havana, falling in love with their handsome leader Alejandro. Desperate to survive, Alejandro grasps at a radical, shocking solution to their plight in this powerful film, which depicts the thin line between haven and hell.
Presented as part of  ¡Sí Cuba! SoCAL, a multi-venue Southern California festival celebrating Cuban culture through art, dance, film music and discussion.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, in conjunction with our program, is presenting "Celebrating Cuban Film" on June 22 at 7:30 p.m. at the Samuel Goldwyn Theatre.  This evening will include a panel discussion with the visiting Cuban filmmakers, clips from their films, and a screening of the Oscar-nominated Strawberry and Chocolate.  Tickets at Oscars.org
