Twenty years ago, the American coming-of-age movie got an electrifying recharge from then 23-year-old writer-director John Singleton, who was one year out of USC Film School and still within shouting distance of his South Central boyhood. His groundbreaking portrayal of his home turf-where young men had to learn to balance morality and survival stunned audiences and the industry alike. Singleton became the first African American to be nominated for an Academy Award in directing, and his cast of then mostly unknowns went on to become stars.
