Turning 25 this year, Rob Reiner’s coming-of-age classic about four boys on a quest to find a dead body—and themselves—stands the test of time and continues to inspire laughter, tears and the kid in all of us.
Unlike many other adolescent films of its time, Stand by Me broached very real and difficult subjects—including grief, abuse and class—with humanity, grace and, most importantly, a sense of humor. The combination of a near-perfect script (based on a short story by Stephen King), Reiner’s delicate direction and a stunning cast of then newcomers culminated in a film for and about young people that speaks to every generation of viewers.
